47 Tobruk’s significance lay in the port facilities of the town – one of only two along the North African coast before Tripoli – together with Hitler’s decision to send the Deutsches Afrika Korps (DAK) to retrieve the Italians’ fortunes after their catastrophic defeat at British and Empire hands in the first Libyan campaign, recently concluded. Although the German contribution to the subsequent campaigns in North Africa has received the lion’s share of attention, especially among film-makers and popular writers, the German effort could not have been sustained without the Italian logistic system in the Mediterranean or the efforts of the Italian navy and air force.

1 There can have been relatively few men in the battalion with direct experience of the new commanding officer from his days as the unit’s adjutant at the war’s beginning. Casualty rates among infantry battalions were nowhere near as severe in the Second World War as they had been in the Great War (unless one was unlucky enough to be in the 8th Division and suffered under the vicious bastardry of Japanese prisoner administration), but turnover within a battalion across five or six years of war was still considerable.
