I didn’t know what was happening. I knew we were heading toward Taiwan.

I went up to the fifth floor in the hospital on the front side so I could see better what was going on. I knew that if somebody needed something, Burnie would come up and get me. Bullets were flying in every direction. Three T-28 aircraft being flown by anti–Diem rebels were dive-bombing Diem’s palace. They were very close. As they released the bombs, anti-aircraft fire was being returned from the palace roof. An earlier coup [27 February 1962] attempt — in which the palace had been bombed — had prompted the installation of those anti-aircraft guns.

She’d come over now and then and say that she wanted to do some painting. We thought she wanted to put a painting of hers in there. But, no. She wanted to help us paint the walls, etc. The ambassador visited patients every so often. The other six Navy nurses arrived as soon as we moved into the building. That was about half way through my one-year tour. Jan Barcott, Bobbi Hovis, and Tweedie [Owedia] Searcy were with that group. Bobbi and Tweedie ended up billeted with us, and the others were billeted at another hotel.
